Kinship Care Options

Below are the options available to care for a relative’s or close friend’s child, ranging from short-term voluntary placement and legal custody to foster parenting, adoption or permanent guardianship with financial support.

Parental Child Safety Placement Program

The Parental Child Safety Placement Program allows you to care for a child for up to 90 days while the parents work on safety issues.

Custody Transfer

A court may give you legal custody so you can make important decisions for the child.

Kinship Resource Parent

If the child needs foster care, you may still be able to care for them by becoming an approved kinship foster parent.

Adoption

You may adopt the child if the court ends the parents’ legal rights.

KinGAP (Kinship Guardianship Assistance Program)

You become the child’s permanent legal guardian and receive monthly financial support to help meet the child’s needs.
